Some cities, like San Francisco, are synonymous with startups. But there are plenty of other places across the U.S. where entrepreneurs are thriving thanks to an abundance of resources to help new businesses grow.

To pinpoint those places, GOBankingRates used data from the Kaufman Index to determine which city is providing the most promising environment for entrepreneurs. The study included the rate of new entrepreneurs, startup density and a variety of other factors that indicate a potentially stronger environment for small businesses. It also looked at the cost of living and projected job growth for the area.

Taken all together, the data helps identify which cities have environments that would give your business the best chance to thrive. If you have the entrepreneur bug but aren’t sure how to proceed, nailing down which city is the best for your company to grow is an essential first step.

19. Riverside, California

  • Rate of new entrepreneurs: 0.36% of the adult population
  • Startup density: 92.4 startups for every 1,000 businesses

This city in California’s Inland Empire has a higher startup density than more than half of the other cities on this list. Entrepreneurship in Riverside gets a boost from ExCITE, a partnership between the University of California Riverside, city and county of Riverside and private industries. This startup accelerator helps new technology businesses through funding, professional resources, and access to lab space and specialized equipment.

It should come as no shock that Riverside is just one of six California cities in this study. The state is richer than most countries due to a thriving economy.
